The Other Side
(Inspired by my mother, Nadean McNutt, who is waiting on the other side)

Many many years ago or was it just the blink of an eye
plans were made for a trip that starts off with a baby’s cry
Through dimensions from a portal descending in a slide
light to dark, dark to light she arrives from the other side

The learning starts with baby steps and things that are small
the learning grows and takes her higher as she become tall
But life is about living, loving, and learning so she must decide
what she’s going to do with this life now that she’s here from the other side

A mother to me and a mother to more
a mother to a total of one plus four
She tried to live life and do what she should
she tried to help others whenever she could



Sometimes life would get to be too much on this magical ride
of living, loving, and learning on this trip from the other side
But no matter what life gave her everyday
good, bad, right, or wrong she always stood her ground and did it her way

Then sometimes the things that we do the things that we sow
develop the cancers that devours us and cause us to go
the life that seemed like it would last forever passed in the blink of an eye
this trip of living, loving, and learning is over and she must return to the other side

Whispers in my ear
My soul felt empty like a big black hole
I had nothing to live for and no place to go
there was no light and I felt the end was near
there was only darkness down a long black peer

the darkness brought anguish and the anguish brought fear
as darkness was about to consume my soul I heard a voice whisper in my ear
the voice so soft, gentle, and serene, said only you know the path to the light
the light is within you he said, you must choose what is tried true and right

if you follow this path the light will begin to appear
remember the light comes from within whispered the voice in my ear
everyone comes here with a plan and a purpose to this life
if this is not accomplished, there will be pain, suffering, and strife





you could have just come here to have some children to rear
or to write or paint or find the next cure said the voice that whispered in my ear
when you can’t find this purpose sometimes your soul can get lost
you search and you search but can’t find it at any cost

finding our purpose may seem so far but really is near
our purpose in life isn’t always what we think it is whispered the voice in my ear
when you find your reason for being you will find the elusive light
now in the dark things seem so right, up in front of me is getting bright

I can see the light when I begin to write and it takes away my fears
there is a voice in the silence but for years I couldn’t hear
I know things will be better and it’s now very clear,

EIGHT SECOND RIDE
(Inspired by the summer I rode bulls in the rodeo)



Standing by the rodeo bleachers a cowboy named Stan
watches the penned bulls with his bull rope in his hand
The cowboy is trying to get his nerves to subside
because his turn is next for his eight second ride

The cowboy freezes and stares in awe
as he hears the announcement of his luck of the draw
The cowboy’s fear flows like the tide
he just tilts his hat and plans his eight second ride

The bull he has drawn is mean and wild
this cowboy has to ride a bull named Flower Child
The cowboy stares at the majestic creature in the shoot
he knows if he can stay on this monster, he will win all the loot

The cowboy moves toward his nemesis with a long fast stride
he climbs on the gate and readies himself for his eight second ride
Flower Child is also ready and dances side to side with pride
ready to make this seem like the longest ever of his eight second rides

The cowboy slowly mounts Flower Child from the side
wraps the rope around his hand and raises the other to signal ready for his eight second ride
There aren’t many rules that the cowboy must abide
but he must keep his free hand up and high for his eight second ride

ONE: The bull jumps from the shoot all four legs off the ground
before it’s legs touch down Flower Child has spun completely around
TWO: Airborne again Flower Child turns to the left and jumps to the right
after a complete spin his hind legs hit the ground with a jolting might

THREE: Jumping up, the bull comes down like a charge of TNT causing the cowboy to slide
trying to keep his balance and not end his ride, the cowboy shifts from side to side
FOUR: Flower Child spins in a circle, like a dog chasing it’s tail
as he turns, his hind legs kick up trying to make the cowboy bail



FIVE: Flower Child, as if set to music, dances to and fro
jumping up and down tries to give the cowboy a throw
SIX: Moving left then spinning right the bull become airborne
the cowboy is thrown forward, very close to the horns

SEVEN: Flower Child begins to spin, spin, spin
the cowboy’s hat flies off in the wind
EIGHT: The sound of the whistle hits his ear
and now there is a new fear

The cowboy sits on top of this beast all alone
there is no escape, there is no help, he must get off this monster on his own
With the bull flying high, the cowboy throws his leg to the side
in a cloud of dust he hits the dirt hard ending his eight second ride

The bull snorts and saliva flies as he charges the cowboy that’s down
but is intercepted by a wild and crazy colorful clown
Running, the cowboy grabs his hat and into the fence he collides
over the fence to the other side he dust himself off and gets ready for his next eight second ride

There comes a time in every young girl's life
when she wants to marry and be a young man's wife
There comes a time when they need to remember to the end
it's good to be lovers but first you have to be friends

One has to be the ying to the other one’s yang
one has to be the umbrella to the other one’s rain
There comes a time when she wants a white gown and maids with frilly dresses on
and a groom and groomsman in black tuxedos wearing Stetsons

There comes a time they need to know marriage is about more than a bride and a groom
it's about being together and letting your love bloom
Try to keep things moving at an even pace
hold on to your love tight while giving it space



Never hide anything, leave nothing in the dark
keep things interesting, always looking for that spark
You need to be the air that the other one breaths
and be the tree for the other one's leaves

You need to be the strength for the other's weakness within
and be the savior for the other one's sin
When mining for love, there's one thing you need as a tool
when excavating true love, you need the golden rule

sometimes for your choice you have to pay
Yes you get to make the choice of the way it will be
just remember in life choices aren’t free

If you choose to tell the boss what you do and don’t like
he might choose tell you to take a hike
If you choose to tell your lover, you’ve found someone else to meet
you may come home and find she chose to throw all you stuff in the street

You may choose to love someone for the rest of you life

The flowers bloomed and the bells rang
the trumpets blew and the angels sang

DEATH
Death is something we try not to think about, but is there from the start
from the time we first open our eyes, we are on that road to depart
Some people live there lives and try to make a mark, and some just try to survive
no matter what you do, you’ll never make it out alive

Death, it’s the great equalizer of men
it doesn’t matter how rich you are, who you know, or where you’ve been
when the angel of death knocks on your door
you can’t hide and you can’t ignore

Some people believe that death is a passing to a new life
that when you close your eyes for the last time, you just look for the light
There are those that think that there is no journey to start
that when you close your eyes for the last time, there is nothing but dark

The meaning of life is death
it’s the one and only thing everyone will do from their first to their last breath
Forget all the gray in-between
forget about taxes, learning, loving, forget about everything

You can’t take anything with you and you don’t really leave anything behind
the only thing that stays is the memory you leave in people’s minds
But even memories will fade away into the past
because nothing last forever, and forever never last

Death really is the final frontier
No one knows what happens when moving from here to there
It’s a mystery and that’s a fact
no one’s ever been all the way there and come all the way back

I hope there’s someplace to go on this trip we all have to take
I prey that there is another side, for our soul’s sake

I woke up this morning it was just another day
tried to separate fantasy from what’s real and move on my way
Had my first cup of coffee just to help me through
it seemed like it was going to be one of those days, so I had two

It’s off to work, got to get into the daily grind
hopefully I can make it though this one without losing my mind
I’m just going through the motions, not much to say
trying to make it through another one and earn my pay

Sometimes things just happen and we don’t know why
but suddenly without warning, I knew I could fly
I don’t know what happened and I’m not sure what to do
but as I tried to clear my head, all I could think of is you

Things got really fuzzy and my head was spinning around
it felt so right, I felt so light as my feet left the ground
I needed to find you, wherever you might be
I needed to find you, so you could fly away with me

Up in the clouds, looking down from space
through all the interference, I can see your smiling face

There’s a game in life that everybody plays
it is played all over the world in many different ways
This is a game that has many different rules
it’s played by those that think they are smart, and it’s played by fools

As you use these rules as your tools
you’ll find that every exception has its rules

There’s a game you have to play to the end
but it’s a game no one can ever win
The game can be played for your whole life
sometimes we even take along a husband or wife

To play the game can really be cool
some play nice and some play cruel
The game can make your nerves run thin
the rules of the game can sometimes make you sin

There is a game that can keep you on the run
some people play for keeps and some play for fun
In the game all things are fair
and some that play the game just don’t care

There’s a game that shouldn’t be played with a friend
that is one of the rules, but rules are made to bend
When playing with a friend, and you take a roll in the clover
when the game is done, your friendship could be over

There is a game where there is no wrong or right
and sometimes to reach your goal, you may have to fight
There is a game where there is no blame
but we still point our fingers just the same

There’s a game that if you want to make it through
you should find someone that likes to play with you
If you can find someone that seems like they were sent from above

THE GUARD

You’re the only one that I could ever meet
that would rather be called a bitch than something sweet
You have a guard up that has no toll
it surrounds your body and protects your soul

You have a guard that likes to show its might
you have a guard, that when crossed, can put up a fight
You have a guard that keeps out all the pain
you have a guard that is driving me insane

No one can get close enough to know the real you
the guard will keep people out, so they can’t make you blue
To show that you care can sometimes cause rain
but the guard is always there to block out the pain

Your guard lets nothing get in
every time I get close, I get pushed back out again
When your guard is up and blocking out the wrong
it’s blocking out what’s right, such as a beautiful song

In order to stop the hurt
the guard buries all feelings in the dirt
The only thing that can get through to you is blood
and even then, you could end up in the mud

I know if I work too hard to penetrate
things won’t go well for my fate
I just need to articulate
bide my time and try to wait

I know your guard is there to protect you from what’s bad
and on that point I agree, because I never want to see you sad
I say that I would never hurt you as I stand by your guarded door

I JUST WANT TO PLAY

Love is what puts the world in a spin
love is what puts fear in grown men
Love makes people go crazy everyday
that’s why when it comes to love, I just want to play

Love is great for a bowl of guppies
you can give your heart to sweet little puppies
Or even an old hound on the stray
but when it comes to love, I just want to play

Love can make a man stand tall
but when that love is gone, it’s such a long fall
Love is the best feeling there is, but love will never stay
that’s why when it comes to love, I just want to play

In true love you have to be an open book
the other person has to be able to read you to see if things cook
Sometimes you open up and they don’t, so it just doesn’t pay
that’s why when it comes to love, I just want to play

When you put yourself out there for loves sake
it gives the other person an advantage to take
When you’re in love, sometimes it’s not easy to say
that’s why when it comes to love, I just want to play

When you’re in love and you give your heart
some people will take that as a weakness and tear it apart
And when the love goes away, it just ends up in a big fray
that’s why when it comes to love, I just want to play

When love is good, you take a deep breath and sigh
when love is bad, you just want to cry
Love starts out like a flower in bloom, but without sunlight it will wilt and decay
that’s why when it comes to love, I just want to play

Sometimes the game gets to be old
it would really be nice to find just one that really knows my soul
If I could find someone that knows the game and wants to play
then when it comes to love, I could play every day

Hurricane
(Inspired by Hurricane Katrina)

Mother Nature had a party down in ole New Orleans
the flowers were in bloom and the birds would sing
The sky was clear, not a cloud to be found
the breeze that rustled through the trees made such a beautiful sound

There was music of the Cajun type
and festivities to match all the hype
There was crawfish on the table hot
and gumbo simmering in the pot

There was a fair with rides and games to play
there were hot dogs and popcorn and candy that last all day
There were people dancing all in a row
everyone was having fun at the fais do-do

Just as the Cajun band began to sing
in walked the devil with all his bling
“Hey mama,” he said to Mother Nature, with a smile
“I got something I know you haven’t had in awhile”

Mother Nature said with that look in her eyes, “what I need, you’ll never know”
then with the wave of her hand she said, “this is a private party, you’ll have to go
Don’t you know about messing with Mother Nature
when you mess with me, bad things occur"

The devil just smiled, “My middle name is bad, so bring yourself here
I’m going to show you what you need and I’m going to be perfectly clear”
The devil grabbed Mother Nature by the arm and to the beat of the music they danced
Satan with his sly grin said, “I’m going to get what I want, so I’m giving you one more chance"

Mother Nature said as she twirled around pulling the devil out to sea
“you’re about to get something you’ll never forget, but it’s not what you want from me”
The devil grabbed Mother Nature ripping her long flowing dress
“when I get done with you, you’re gonna forget all the rest”

The winds started to swirl and the clouds started to rain
the water started to rise and from the sky came a loud bang
Hot and cold don’t play well in this game
but when you have hot and cold and good and evil, you have a hurricane



Out in the Gulf, the water kept rising and the winds kept blowing way up in the sky
the winds, going in a circle formed a great big eye, then watched this battle like a giant spy
As the storm moved around in the Gulf, no one knew which way it would lean
Then as the battle continued, the storm headed up the Mississippi river to New Orleans

The devil licked his lips and raised his brow
“I know this is what you want and you’re going to get it now”
The devil grabbed a bosom and came in for the kill
Mother Nature kept spinning and over the levies the water did spill

As the winds raged over the bayous the devil surveyed the souls he could reap
so with his hand around mother’s throat, he made the water get deep
The damage was prolific as the storm took its tole
the devil with a firm grip on Mother Nature kept on collecting his souls

Mother Nature, in great desperation, changed the fight
when she caught the devil with a great big bite
Then with a fast swirling move, she gave him a hard kick in the groin
just then, suddenly the wind stopped blowin’



Mother Nature gave the devil a swift kick in the knee
as he ran fast across the border into Mississippi
Mother Nature’s senses became very keen
as she surveyed the destruction in New Orleans

Mother Nature began to cry for all the souls that had passed
things started so quickly and was over so fast
And this great city will never be the same
after being ravaged and raped by this hurricane

Someday she’ll think back
When I was twelve, there was Carol, a love of the puppy type
we didn’t know what we were doing and it was filled with hype
There was kissing and hugging that was just a game by two young souls lost on a raft
maybe someday she’ll think way back in her mind and have a good laugh

When I was fourteen, there was Barbara, the one that got away
I was busy with other things, I had other games to play
I was coming, she was going, and at fourteen there were other things that had me on the prowl
maybe sometime in her life she’ll go back to that place for awhile

When I was fifteen, there was Jewel that I had to travel to see
after a few trips, I found it was my cousin she wanted, so it wasn’t meant to be
I got the news in a letter of the Dear John kind
maybe from time to time she will stop and think back and I’ll be there on her mind

When I was seventeen, there was Elaine, a love that I knew was my soul-mate
but after coming back from the war, well I just got there too late
Sometimes we are in love but it’s not what it seems
I hope at night, when she closes her eyes to sleep, that sometimes I’ll be in her dreams

When I was nineteen, there was candy, my sweet Seattle romance
I was in the navy and met her quite by chance
When I got out of the navy, I went home and for us that was the end
maybe there will be a moment in time when she will think back and remember she had a friend

When I was twenty-one there was Georgia and things went too fast
before I knew it I was married, but without true love, things didn’t last
I know things didn’t go so well, I know things ended kinda bad
I hope that when she thinks back on this part of her life she won’t be too sad

When I was twenty-three, my soul-mate Elaine and I crossed paths on the road of life
things were different now, I was different, she was different and I still had a wife
Maybe someday we’ll meet again on that road from the past
maybe someday she’ll think back and wonder why a love so deep couldn’t last

When I was thirty-three, I met Deborah, wife number two
it seemed like this time I had found a love that was true
At first we were so glad, but now it seems like we’re always so mad
maybe someday after I’m gone, she’ll think back about the good times and not the bad



There have been many women that I’ve known over the years in my life
there was family, those that were my friends, I had lovers and some were my wife
There was those that I knew for many years, some for a short time and a few for just a little while From time to time maybe they will think back of me and smile

Dear Santa, I know I haven't been all that good
but if I had someone to love, I promise I would do what I should
I want someone that will be there for better or worst
I want someone that I can hold to the highest and she will put me first

Dear Santa, I know it's the giving time of year
I don't want much, just someone special to hold near
I know there are people more in need than I
I just want someone to touch and hear her sigh

Dear Santa, I don't want any presents or toys
I want a love that will last and all those little joys
I just want someone to love me for me
and not try to change me into what they want me to be

Dear Santa, would it be wrong of me, would it be too much to ask
for someone that will always be here, for a love that will last
I know there is suppose to be someone for me and someone for you
but so far, I haven't found that someone special that's true

Dear Santa, there is someone that I want for this happy occasion
but she can't be with me because there are some complications
She has her reasons and I have my commitments just for a start
there are many reasons on this day that will keep us apart

Dear Santa, there are so many things that I will miss
so these are the things I want for Christmas
To hold her in my arms is at the top of my list
the next gift I want to unwrap is her sweet kiss

Dear Santa, to breath her essence deep in my soul

I know you're no angel and I know the devil’s not your friend
I know there’s things that only you know that you keep deep within
There’s things that you’re not proud of and you have your regrets
there’s a place that only you know that’s filled with your deep dark secrets

Somewhere between good and evil and somewhere between right and wrong
there’s a place in the darkness with a light shining through as you search for a place you belong
there are things in your past that keep jumping up and giving you fits
you think you can make them go away, all your deep dark secrets

I know there’s a pedestal where your angel sits
I know you have a devil that hides in the pits
What I see from you is good, because that’s all I ever get
but I know somewhere is a closet full of skeletons hiding your deep dark secrets

Everyone has there dirty laundry and I know you have yours too
I don’t want to know them all, but I would like to know a few
Some people have things buried so very deep, and as time goes by they forget
even if you chose not to remember your demons, they’re still your deep dark secrets

Some people hide there demons right in plain sight
they just dress them up so they look like they’re right
but a demon is a demon on that you can bet
no matter how they look, they’re still your deep dark secrets

You can look in the darkness for all that’s bad and all their lies
the ones that are truly evil will take it with them on the day they die
When they get to where they’re going, there will be people they’ve met
maybe then they can reminisce about all their deep dark secrets

In-between the depths of what’s evil and the heights of what’s good
is a place where most of us are, well at least we should
If you keep everything in the middle, and that’s as bad as it gets
then they won’t be too deep and they won’t be too dark, your deep dark secrets

If you show me your darkness I can see what’s true
then shine your light and show me the real you
open your secret door and please have no frets
you’ll feel better once you’ve shared your deep dark secrets



I’ll show you my demons if you show me yours
exposing all your demons is what holds the cure
Demons can take on a life of there own, so dig them up if they’ll let

I've felt love and it really felt good

I've had my soul touched and felt another's love
but no matter how good that is, I don’t do love

Throughout each day, you are all that I'm thinking of

I've given love and had my heart handed to me in my hand
I've been left standing trying to understand

AND I CRIED
There's been people and things that I have loved through the years
but nothing last forever and that lost love only brings tears
I've thought of the things that have happened and the things that have passed by
I looked out into nothing searching for everything, I hung my head, and I cried

when I was a child, there was a dog that I loved, that really meant no harm
but he killed a stray dog and they told me they were sending him to a farm
I loved this dog and didn’t want to let him go because I knew they had lied
even at nine, I knew he was going to the pound to die, and I cried

There are places I've been in this world throughout
all across the north, all across the south
Some I got to by car, some by ship, and some I had to fly
I've thought about places I've been that I will never see again, and I cried

When my kids were born, each were their own delight
each one, on their day, was the most important day of my life
When I held them in my arms for the first time and they looked up at me and sighed
my heart was so full of happiness that I couldn't stand it, and I cried

I had a marriage where nothing went right
all we ever did was argue and fight
After we split, what hurt the most, I just can't deny
she took my kids and left the state, and I cried

I had a job that defined who I was
I know that sounds crazy but that's what a man does
One day I had to make a stand, I had to defy
things didn't go my way, I lost my job, and I cried

We went through a lot, my mother and I, in the years of my life
it seemed like we were always stumbling through the dark, searching for the light
When my mother died, I couldn't help but wonder why
I stood there lost and watched her go in the ground, and I cried

Everywhere I've gone, there were people that I met
there are people that are in my mind that I will never forget
I've thought about seeing them again, but know that I can't no matter how hard I try
I've thought about how it would be to see these old friends, and I cried
